Accessibility statement for leedsconservatoire.ac.uk

This website is run by Leeds Conservatoire. At the conservatoire, we want as many people as possible to successfully access our website and its content. We are actively working on refining and improving the accessibility of these services and will continue to update this accessibility statement as changes are made.

Note: We are in the process of replacing our website and aim to address all accessibility issues during this process, which we aim to be complete by late 2022.

For example, on our current website that means you should be able to:

  • change colours, contrast levels and fonts
  • zoom in up to 300% without the text spilling off the screen
  • navigate most of the website using just a keyboard
  • navigate most of the website using speech recognition software
  • listen to most of the website using a screen reader (including the most recent versions of JAWS, NVDA and VoiceOver)

We’ve also made the website text as simple as possible to understand.

AbilityNet has advice on making your device easier to use if you have a disability.

How accessible this website is

We know some parts of this website are not fully accessible right now:

  • Accordion content (where content can be opened and closed by clicking on a heading bar - e.g. for FAQs) is not able to be navigated by keyboard
  • Tabbed content (where content can be cycled through by clicking on a heading) is not able to be navigated by keyboard
  • When the user tabs through the page and back past the URL, keyboard focus goes to links at the top of the page but this is not visible as the page does not scroll back to the top
  • Some video iFrames do not contain accessible text for screen readers
  • Some 'all categories' filters on pages (e.g. on What's On) do not have visible accessible labels

Feedback and contact information - including requesting alternative formats

If you need any of the information on our website in a different format like accessible PDF, large print, audio recording or braille:

  • email hello@lcm.ac.uk
  • Tell us what content you would like as well as your preferred format

We will consider your request and get back to you in two working days.

A map with directions to our building at 3 Quarry Hill is available via Google Maps. If you cannot view this map, email us using the information on our contact us page for directions.

Reporting accessibility problems with our website or content

We are always looking for ways to improve the accessibility of our website and its content. If you find any problems that are not listed on this page or if we are not meeting accessibility requirements, contact us:

Include a link or screenshot of the problem and provide as detailed a description as possible.

We will respond to your report within two working days.

Enforcement procedure

The Equality and Human Rights Commission (EHRC) is responsible for enforcing the Public Sector Bodies (Websites and Mobile Applications) (No. 2) Accessibility Regulations 2018 (the ‘accessibility regulations’). If you’re not happy with how we respond to your complaint, contact the Equality Advisory and Support Service (EASS).

Technical information about this website’s accessibility

Leeds Conservatoire is committed to making its website accessible, in accordance with the Public Sector Bodies (Websites and Mobile Applications) (No. 2) Accessibility Regulations 2018.

Compliance status

This website is partially compliant with the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines version 2.1 AA standard, due to the non-compliances and exemptions listed below.

Non-accessible content

The content listed below is non-accessible for the following reasons.

Disproportionate burden

When the user tabs through the page and back past the URL, keyboard focus goes to links at the top of the page but this is not visible as the page does not scroll back to the top. This fails WCAG 2.1 success criterion 2.4.7 (Focus Visible).

Some video iFrames do not contain accessible text. This fails WCAG 2.1 success criteria 2.4.1 (Bypass Blocks) and 4.1.2 (Name, Role, Value: Frames must have an accessible name).

Accordion content (where content sections can be opened and closed by clicking on a heading bar - e.g. for FAQs) and Tabbed content (where content sections can be cycled through by clicking on a heading) are not able to be navigated by keyboard. This fails WCAG 2.1 success criterion 2.1.1 (Keyboard).

Interactive tools and transactions

Some 'all categories' filters on pages (e.g. on What's On) do not have visible accessible labels. This fails WCAG 4.1.2 (Name, Role, Value: Select element must have an accessible name).

We are in the process of replacing our website and aim to address all accessibility issues during this process, which we aim to be complete by late 2022. Due to this, we’ve assessed that the cost of fixing the issues with navigation and accessing information, and with interactive tools and transactions on our current website would be a disproportionate burden within the meaning of the accessibility regulations.

What we’re doing to improve accessibility

Staff support and training

We provide guidance to all staff on creating accessible content.

Staff training and awareness of digital accessibility best practice is incredibly important to us at Leeds Conservatoire, and we are emphasising the development of staff knowledge in this area through:

  • Digital accessibility awareness initiatives
  • Support materials
  • Staff training
  • Accessible templates for digital documents

We are also providing guidance on the use of accessible language.

Replacing current website with fully WCAG 2.1 AA compliant version

We are in the process of replacing our website and aim to address all accessibility issues during this process, which we aim to be complete by late 2022.

Preparation of this accessibility statement

This statement was prepared on 20 September 2019. It was last reviewed on 6 June 2022.

The website was last tested on 9 May 2022. The test was carried out by Leeds Conservatoire using a mixture of automated and manual reviews.

When deciding on a sample of pages to test, we ensured that a selection of different page types were chosen (e.g. Listing, News, Course, General Content, Form, Event, Profile).

A revised accessibility statement will be produced on completion of the replacement website.
