A band who formed in 2020 after meeting at Leeds Conservatoire will perform at this year’s Glastonbury Festival, after impressing industry experts in the 2022 Emerging Talent Competition.
From thousands of entries, English Teacher, made up of Lily Fontaine (vocals, rhythm guitar, synth), Douglas Frost (drums), Nicholas Eden (bass) and Lewis Whiting (lead guitar, synth), secured one of two runners-up spots.
Days after the release of their debut EP ‘Polyawkward’, the band performed at an invite-only final at Pilton Working Men’s Club on Saturday 30 April. Judges on the night included Emily Eavis, Glastonbury stage bookers and music business professionals.
Following the final, Emily Eavis, Glastonbury organiser, shared on social media:
“What a night, so many great bands, all playing in the final of our ETC. Congratulations to Lewis McLaughlin and Crae Wolf as well as English Teacher. As the standard was so high all night long, we are giving every finalist a gig at this year’s festival!”
As one of the runners-up, English Teacher will also receive a £2,500 Talent Development prize from PRS Foundation.

- Opening the John Peel Stage on Friday 24 June (11:30AM - 12:15PM)
- Performing at Strummerville on Friday 24 June (10:00PM - 10:50PM)
- Performing at BBC Music Introducing on Saturday 25 June (4:30PM - 4:55PM)
