From September 2022, Leeds Playhouse, in collaboration with Leeds Conservatoire, will deliver a new MA in Dramaturgy.

This postgraduate course joins a suite of new drama focused MA programmes at Leeds Conservatoire, including Musical Direction, Musical Theatre Company and Musical Theatre Creatives, with a focus on supporting the development of new work and new artists in the North.

Students on the MA Dramaturgy programme will work closely with the team at Leeds Playhouse, especially the Artistic Planning department and the Furnace Artistic Development programme, to develop their theoretical understanding of theatre-making and the role of the dramaturg in practice.

In addition to working practically with artists from Leeds Playhouse and their partners, postgraduate students will also work collaboratively with the postgraduate community at Leeds Conservatoire to forge creative relationships, create work and develop their craft.

Erin Carter, Programme Leader at Leeds Conservatoire, says;

"I am thrilled to be collaborating with our partners, Leeds Playhouse on the delivery of our new MA in Dramaturgy. Both institutions are development engines, passionate about artistic development, championing new work and new voices. So, there is no more fitting a collaboration than coming together to train dramaturgs. The benefits for dramaturgy students, working closely with such a theatrical powerhouse, at the coalface of new work and development are immeasurable."

Within Leeds Conservatoire, the resources, facilities and creative energy generated by a community of postgraduate artist’s is the perfect place to examine, challenge and develop practice. The addition of this industry-led partnership is the cherry on the theatrical cake.

Amy Leach, Associate Director at Leeds Playhouse, says;

“We are really excited about this collaboration with Leeds Conservatoire, which will provide the students with hands-on experience in a working theatre alongside our fantastic team of artists and creators. Working with these students will open up a world of possibilities for how we can make work and support artists in this city and to expand the boundaries of what we think about when we think of dramaturgy.”
