You went to study at the Royal College of Music – what was that like for you? Do you think studying at a Conservatoire is important for young musicians?

I had a great four years at the Royal College of Music, making some really good friends and learning from some kind and inspiring teachers.  Having the opportunity to be around like-minded people in a creative environment is crucial for developing as a musician.

You formed your acclaimed Latin band, Grupo X, who have been played on many radio stations including Radio 6 – why did you decide to form this band?

There was a great Latin music scene in London in the ‘90s.  I was lucky enough to join successful salsa band, Orquesta La Clave, while still at college.  We played all around the UK and Europe and I learned a lot about the music from playing with some wonderful musicians from the UK and Latin America.

After a few years  I decided that I wanted to lead my own band and write music for it, so I started Grupo X.  We soon became regulars at London’s Jazz Cafe and released our first album in 2001.  Our sixth album release, “Saturday Night” is due out this June!

What is your favourite thing about teaching at Leeds Junior Conservatoire?

I’ve taught at Leeds Junior Conservatoire (or SMS as it used to be known) since 2003, so I have many favourite things.  What’s kept me here, in spite of lots early Saturday morning starts after late Friday night gigs, is that I’m constantly inspired by talented young musicians and I really enjoy helping them along their paths.  It also helps to work alongside a great, supportive and friendly bunch of people from eclectic musical backgrounds.

What advice would you give to young musicians who are wanting to work in the music industry?

Work hard, be flexible and don’t be put off if things don’t work out as you’d expected.  Keep listening to lots of music and have an open mind.  Make the most of any opportunities and do what you enjoy.  Be friendly and turn up on time!
