Hi Frankie - What made you choose Leeds Conservatoire?

I studied BA Music in Birmingham and still believed there was more to learn about songwriting. My BA was only a two-year course, so I wanted to develop more as a musician and invest more creative time into my music as a conservatoire student. I chose to study in Leeds because I had heard so much about the city and its incredible music scene and opportunities.

Has anything been totally different to what you expected when you started at Leeds Conservatoire?

Yes, 100%. I was surprised at how many opportunities [to collaborate] are posted weekly! The internal opportunities page (LIFE) is such a helpful platform, and is the reason I have managed to put a band together, find a producer and gain work experience. The opportunities promoted and provided by the conservatoire really motivate me and have allowed my musical career to start taking shape.

Is there anything that has really made you push yourself as a musician or performer?

I have learnt a lot about self-discipline in the sense that nothing will happen if you sit and wait. It's all about taking action and just going for it! I am a little bit of a perfectionist, so whilst studying here, I have learnt how to finish a piece of work confidently instead of being locked up in ideas. This 'letting go' approach has allowed my music to advance tremendously.

What is your best memory from Leeds Conservatoire?

Creating my new band! It's has been so much fun, and I always enjoy socialising with my new friends.

What sort of accommodation are you living in? What advice would you give to new students about accommodation?

I am living in a private Unipol flat. They are a company that rent cheap and quality rooms, and they are super tentative. I live on New York St, five minutes away from the conservatoire. It's ideal - super close to the Kirkgate market and city centre.

What do you get up to outside of studying?

I do local crew and sound jobs. I helped to set up the backline for Sam Fender's arena show in Leeds the other day! I also work as a waiter in a local restaurant and sell bespoke vintage clothing and eco products online.

What is the best thing about living and studying in Leeds?

The freedom and the social life. You will always find someone in the Leeds Conservatoire cafe who's up for a chat. The city is super welcoming and friendly!

What advice would you give to a prospective student thinking of applying to your course?

Go for it. If you make the most of everything too, you'll love it.

What was your musical background before undertaking the course?

I have had loads of experience within the music industry away from studying, including playing at major festivals alongside Catfish and The Bottlemen and having plenty of radio play on BBC's channels.

How would you describe your experience at Leeds Conservatoire so far in three words?

Lots of possibilities.

Can you tell us a bit about yourself and your music?

I write folk/pop music with influxes of Soul. Currently, I'm working on my debut release. I've been writing music for five years now, and I am at the point where I believe my music is good enough to start my career off as successfully as possible. I write about manifesting where I want to be and see myself, and I believe people can also attach themselves to this idea of hope.

How has studying at Leeds Conservatoire influenced your work?

I have one to one sessions each week which helps me develop and make sense of my creative ideas. I find this session very helpful in guiding my songwriting and music.
